Graduate Certificate -
Engineering Management
The Engineering Management Certificate
Program consists of the four courses listed below, which are delivered as part
of our regular master's degree program in Engineering Management. Students will
be responsible for prerequisite knowledge as determined by course
instructors.
Engineering Management 314:
Management for Engineers and Scientists
To facilitate the transition of the engineer to manager; Understand the roles
and responsibilities of managers; Appreciate the complexities of modern
organizations; Develop insights into managing people, groups, projects, and
systems; Build perspective on organizational stakeholders Introduce key skills
for successful management.
Engineering Management 352:
Financial Decision Analysis To develop an understanding of the preparation and analysis of financial
statements and forecasted financial statements. The course will introduce tools
and techniques used in making decision regarding asset expansion and the
related cost of capital and optimal capital structure. The course will include
the study of time value of money concepts and capital budgeting
techniques.
Engineering Management 361:
Project Management Organization structure and staffing, motivation, authority and influence,
conflict management, project planning, network systems, pricing, estimating,
and cost control, proposal preparation, project information systems,
international project management; normally includes a semester group
project.
Engineering Management 365:
Operations Management Science Design and analysis of operations using concepts of management science.
Systems are modeled and analyzed using quantitative and qualitative techniques
and solved using modern information technology.
Admission:
This certificate program is open to all persons holding a B.S., M.S., or Ph.D.
degree (with at least one degree in Engineering or hard science) and who have a
minimum of 12 months of professional employment experience or are currently
accepted into a graduate degree program at Missouri S&T.
Once admitted to the program, the
student must take the four designated courses. In order to receive a
Graduate Certificate, the student must have an cumulative grade point
average of 3.0 or better in the certificate courses. Once admitted
into the program, a student will be given three years to complete the
program.
Students admitted to the Certificate
Program will have non-degree graduate status but will earn graduate credit for
the courses they complete. If the four-course sequence is completed with a
grade of "B" or better in each of the courses, they will be admitted to
the appropriate M.S. program if they apply. The Certificate course taken by
students admitted to the M.S. program will count towards their master’s
degree. Students who do not have all of the prerequisite courses necessary
to take the courses in the Certificate Program will be allowed to take
"bridge" courses at either the graduate or undergraduate level to
prepare for the formal Certificate courses.
Program Benefits
This certificate program aims to
provide individuals with a core body of Engineering Management knowledge that
includes key technical management concepts, processes, and methods for
individuals preparing to transition from individual technical contributors to
managers of complex technological projects.
The certificate program coverage
includes planning, organizing, allocating resources, and directing and
controlling technical projects and people in technical jobs.
